CPOC Statement on Humphrey Ruling

Post

Sacramento, CA, March 25, 2021 – The Chief Probation Officers of California (CPOC) issued the following statement from Executive Director Karen Pank, in response to the California Supreme Court decision in the Humphrey case:

“After today’s ruling, Probation departments throughout the state will continue to work to create programs that eliminate the role of wealth or financial status in pretrial release. The research is clear, the negatives of cash bail fall disproportionately on Black and Brown communities without improving safety. Wealth should play no role in the justice system and we will continue to fight for a pretrial system that focuses on safety, fairness and effectiveness for system-involved individuals and our communities.”
