Probation Services Week Spotlight: Shasta County River’s Edge Academy
Shasta County Probation Connects Services to Need for In-Custody Youth

Post

Shasta County’s Probation Department is intensifying their efforts to provide wraparound services to connect in-custody youth to treatment options. This year they opened the River’s Edge Academy (“Academy”), which provides local treatment for youth ages 14-17 and offers a safe and effective alternative to out-of-home placement.

A new in-custody commitment treatment and camp program, the Academy provides the hope and help young people need to remain in their community and maintain connections with family and pro-social support systems.

Youth also continue to receive opportunities such as educational services and support from the Shasta County Office of Education and local school districts and many youth have already established relationships with providers in the community.

The Academy continues to connect youth in their care to evidence-based treatment services, including an on-site mental health clinician serving youth and families in the program and extensive cognitive-behavioral and substance use disorder treatment. Camp components such as a regimented schedule, physical training, environmental projects, and community service have been integrated into the curriculum to provide for a holistic approach to rehabilitation that sees the whole person, and is guided by a trauma informed approach and lens for equity.

The Academy provides a treatment environment based on the Five Stages of Change. As youth advance through the stages, they will earn privileges and have the opportunity to participate in off-site events, activities and utilize home passes. Children and Family Team meetings and transition planning are essential components of the Academy to ensure a continuum of treatment is available — enhancing success as youth reenter the community.

Shasta County Probation is using innovative, evidence-based practices to create hope and and provide help to the youth they serve. We celebrate their success and commitment to the communities they serve this Probation Services Week, and all year long.
