San Rafael, Calif. – August 12, 2025 – The Marin County Probation Department proudly funds and celebrates the 10th anniversary of its Career Explorer Program, a transformative initiative that has opened doors for hundreds of local youths. What began a decade ago with just 15–20 interns has grown into a robust, countywide program now serving more than 50 interns annually.

“This milestone is more than just a number — it’s a testament to the lasting impact of investing in our youth,” said Marlon Washington, Chief Probation Officer. “The Career Explorer Program has opened doors, built confidence, and created pathways to public service and meaningful careers.”

The County celebrated this summers’ 53 Explorers during a graduation event August 6 in the Marin County Board of Supervisors chamber at the Civic Center in San Rafael.

…Fueled by strong partnerships with County of Marin departments and community-based organizations, the Explorers program provides youths, many facing barriers to employment, with real-world experience, professional connections, and a deeper understanding of the public sector.

While the program has concluded for the year, several interns have already been offered extended placements with their host departments. This reflects the interns’ exceptional performance and the County’s commitment to Marin’s youth.

“The Career Explorer Program is more than just a summer internship — it’s an opportunity to gain insight into the public sector,” said Yanira Gonzalez, a Career Explorer intern with the Probation Department.

“When I first joined the department, my knowledge was limited, but each day I gained a deeper understanding of the importance of integrity, leadership, and, most importantly, community service. I was fortunate to be surrounded by dedicated professionals who not only served as role models but were also open and eager to share their knowledge and experiences with me. Their guidance played a key role in my personal and professional growth throughout the program.”

The program began with a two-week orientation covering:

Work-readiness workshops: résumé writing, interview preparation, and public speaking.

Soft skills workshops: professionalism, communication skills, and workplace expectations.

As the Career Explorer Program celebrates its first decade, the Probation Department remains committed to expanding opportunities for local youths, strengthening community partnerships, and preparing the next generation of public service professionals. The Probation team is dedicated to fostering and providing equitable services to the communities we serve by holding individuals accountable while prioritizing their rehabilitation and growth.
