SACRAMENTO, Calif. (June 9, 2025) – The Chief Probation Officers of California (CPOC) issued the following statement in response to the legislative budget agreement announced today by Senate and Assembly leadership:

“We do appreciate the acknowledgement of Prop 36 in today’s budget announcement, but unfortunately, it is disappointing as it does not fund the core of Prop 36: supervision and accountability,” said Chief Steve Jackson, CPOC President and Chief Probation Officer of San Joaquin County. “The one-time funds for Prop 36 are little more than window dressing, as they ignore what voters clearly demanded. Without new dollars for supervision, drug offenders are less likely to complete treatment, and public safety is at risk. Probation departments already have to do more with less. Now, with no funds allocated to accountability and supervision, the state is failing to deliver the outcomes Californians expect and communities deserve.”
