The Yolo County Probation Department is observing Probation Services Week from July 20 to 26 to recognize the work of its officers and staff in promoting community safety and rehabilitation.

The department uses enforcement and evidence-based strategies to help reduce crime and repeat offenses.

“These professionals are often the unsung heroes in our justice system working quietly, diligently, and with compassion to create lasting change,” said Yolo County Board of Supervisors Chair Mary Vixie Sandy.

Chief Probation Officer Rachelle Gayton stated, “Our officers and staff bring strength, integrity, and heart to a role that changes lives and strengthens this wonderful community,” according to the Yolo County.

Probation officers work with courts, schools, behavioral health providers, law enforcement, and service agencies to help support individuals under supervision.

They are required to complete over 350 hours of training in their first two years and continue with annual education.

CommuniCare+OLE, a longtime partner of the Yolo County Probation Department, acknowledged the department’s collaboration in supporting community health.

When systems can effectively partner and align with shared goals, our clients and communities’ benefit,” said Sara Gavin, Chief Behavioral and Community Health Officer for CommuniCare+OLE.

The Yolo County Probation Department provides community-based alternatives to incarceration. Yolo County District Attorney Jeff Reisig said the department offers services “from their 365 day Supervised Own Recognizance program, which engages immediately with the incarcerated person upon their arrest, to analyze their suitability to be released on their own recognizance, to their post-sentence supervision program,” as stated by the Yolo County.
